MOSFET Gate Drive and On-Resistance: A Purchasing Guide
Learn why gate threshold, specified drive voltage and gate charge must be checked before buying replacement power MOSFETs.

Compare on-resistance at a gate voltage your driver actually supplies, then review gate charge and the switching conditions. Gate threshold is a small-current measurement, not a guaranteed low-resistance operating point. Keep the complete device datasheet with the quotation so engineering can check limits and typical curves in context.
Decision checklist
| Check | Evidence to request | Reason to pause approval |
|---|---|---|
| Threshold | Read its specified drain-current condition | Assuming threshold guarantees low resistance |
| On-resistance | Compare gate voltage, current and temperature | Ranking bare milliohm figures |
| Gate charge | Review stated conditions and driver capability | Changing device without reviewing the driver |

Why gate threshold is not enough
Two MOSFET offers can look similar in a purchasing spreadsheet while requiring different drive conditions. Gate threshold is measured at a specified small drain current. It does not establish that the device has reached the low on-resistance needed to carry the intended load.
Read the conditions beside on-resistance
Check the gate-source voltage, current and temperature associated with the on-resistance specification. A resistance value without its conditions is an incomplete comparison. Ask your engineer whether the available driver voltage matches a guaranteed specification for the exact ordering code, rather than relying on a typical curve alone.
Include gate charge in the comparison
The driver must charge and discharge the gate during switching. Gate charge information helps engineers assess those demands. Compare it at the stated measurement conditions and review the circuit frequency and driver capability. A lower on-resistance number by itself does not resolve the complete switching-loss trade-off.
Give suppliers a complete requirement
Include the complete MPN, package, acceptable condition, quantity and whether engineering-approved alternatives may be quoted. If alternatives are allowed, ask for the relevant manufacturer datasheets and a clear explanation of differences. Do not let an abbreviated marking or a similar advertised current silently become your substitution rule.
Use a clear approval record
Keep the drive requirements and engineering assessment alongside the quotation. For used lots, request separate information about lot identity, processing history and inspection scope. The electrical design review and incoming condition review answer different questions. Recheck proposed changes to the device or driver before approving repeat orders.

What should stop an order?
Pause approval when the full part identity, agreed condition or evidence needed for your decision is unresolved. Ask the supplier to clarify the specific gap. Keep the response with the order record so that a later buyer can see what was actually approved.
